Acker, Richard Dick - MATH TEACHER
Richard (Dick) Acker was a WWII veteran who enlisted upon high school graduation and was on the beaches of Normandy. He had the most diverse set of passions – an avid outdoorsman, swimming in district 281, Opera, Minnesota Federation of Teachers, a skilled mathematician ( a stickler for doing math properly) and a fierce determination for doing what was right as he saw it. Dick Acker at Hosterman Junior High in the years before he transferred to Armstrong. Christine Benson, the daughter of his best friend from Dick’s days on the University of Minnesota swim team.

Died peacefully in Robbinsdale Saturday morning, Sept. 5, 2015 surrounded by family singing her into heaven. Bonnie is survived by her husband Clay Brady; children Mike (Pam) Brady, Sandi (Jay) Sather, Diane (Tom) Brady-Leighton, 8 beloved grandchildren and 6 cherished great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Lois, and survived by her sister Pat Fantozzi. Bonnie was born on 11/29/28 in Breckenridge, ND to Ovidia and Orton Larson. She graduated Salutatorian from Wahpeton High School in 1946. She attended 2 years at Wahpeton Science School and graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead. She taught in Detroit Lakes, Dwight, ND and District #281 where she was a special ed and ESL teacher at Armstrong for 18 of her 20 years in the district. She met the love of her life, Clay Brady, at Concordia where Bonnie reports "he found me in the library." They were married in Detroit Lakes on June 22, 1952 and lived in DC, Cleveland, St. Louis, Chicago and Golden Valley. Some of their great joys included time at their lake home, singing in their church choir, and time with their family and friends. Bonnie was accomplished at croquet, card games and water skiing and due to her spunky, competitive nature, her children and grandchildren were not spared defeat no matter their age. A funeral is scheduled for 11:00 AM Sat., Sept. 12 2015 with a luncheon to follow at Calvary Lutheran in Golden Valley. Corcoran, Alvin John age 86, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2020, with family by his side in Edina, Minnesota. He was born September 4, 1934, to Alvin & Evelyn (Jensen) Corcoran. Al was a 1952 graduate of Roosevelt High School (Minneapolis, MN) and a proud 1956 graduate of Saint Olaf College (Northfield, MN). Al received his Master's degree from Michigan State, and spent his career teaching chemistry and social studies in the Robbinsdale school district for over 30 years. Al served as an Officer of the US Navy, where he was commissioned at Newport, RI and served in the military 3.5 years, including time overseas in Guam. His hobbies included gardening, hosting parties and decorating for Christmas. He was well known for his holiday parties and outdoor holiday lights display. Al was 1 of 7 children, and the oldest son. He was preceded in death by his parents Alvin & Evelyn Corcoran, his sister Barbara Davidson and his brother Mike Corcoran. He is survived by loving family members including his brothers Pat Corcoran, John Corcoran, Joey Corcoran, and sister Margaret Olson. He was surrounded in life with the love of many nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors. In 2003, Al was the recipient of a liver transplant which was an amazing blessing and granted him an extension of life. He was always incredibly grateful to his donor and his family for that gift of life. Al was deeply rooted in his Christian faith throughout his life, teaching Sunday school, confirmation, and leading bible study groups for over 25 years. Until his death, he had clear recollections of the day he was baptized at 5 years old at Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls. Al spoke with confidence and vigor about his confidence in life after death with his savior Jesus Christ. Cunningham, John husband, sweetheart & best friend of Sandy took his final curtain call at 81 years of age on January 14, 2020. Born & raised in Excelsior/Chanhassen area. Graduated from Minnetonka High School '56. Taught drama/speech at Cooper and Armstrong high schools for 30 years. Director "Mr. C" of theater performances dramas and musicals. Erickson, Darrell R. 65, died Nov. 1 in Ponce Inlet, Florida. He was a beloved father, teacher, coach, and friend. He grew up in Mpls, graduated from Henry HS and the U of M, and was a long-time social studies teacher and coach. He was known for his quick wit, blue eyes, charm, love of sports, passion for teaching, and knack for storytelling. He was enormously proud of his daughters, Kate and Karla. He was loved by Karla and her husband, Matt, Kate, and her partner, Jodell, their son, Miles, and his ex-wife, Cathie. He is also remembered by sisters, Sandy and Darlene, extended family, colleagues, friends, and generations of students. No services. He loved his family and his family loved him. Dennis age 83 of Plymouth, Minnesota passed away on May 19 due to COVID-19. He was born in Willmar, MN on Sept. 8, 1937. Dennis graduated from Willmar High School in 1955 and married Karen, the love of his life, in 1962. Dennis served 3 years in the US Army. He then earned a degree in speech pathology at St. Cloud State University and went on to work for Robbinsdale School District 281 as a speech pathologist for 32 years. Throghout his career at Armstrong High School Dennis enjoyed coaching golf and volleyball, including 5 state champion volleyball teams. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Armstrong High School, Willmar High School, and MN Volleyball Coaches Association. Dennis cherished time spent with family and friends, especially golfing, hunting & fishing. Guided in life by his faith, Dennis was preceded in death by parents Eugene & Alice; brothers Wayne & Gene (Doris). Juliot, Norman L. Age 88 of Brooklyn Park, Minn., formerly of New Hope. Passed away on August 31, 2018 at home surrounded by family -- wife Bonnie of 67 years and three children, Kevin (Fran), Kari Stimac (John Wubbels), and Kent (Deborah). Norm served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, his community for 27 years at School District 281 and the world by volunteering at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store for more than two decades. Norm was a humble man of deep faith who made a profound difference by sharing his passion for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at church and everywhere he went. He was loved by all who knew him. Kleyman, Harvey "Rick" Age 81 of Plymouth, passed away March 16 at Parks' Place Memory Care. Preceded in death by parents, sister Judie Burke, and son-in-law Brian Curry. Survived by wife of 54 years, Judie; son David (Jody) and daughter Kerry; treasured grandchildren Dylan and Alyson; sister Roxanne Markoff (Daniel Patenaude) and brother Paul. Rick's love for running began at Mpls. North HS, then continued to the UMN. After receiving an MA in education from St. Thomas. Rick enjoyed a 35+ year career as a math teacher and CC/Track coach at Armstrong HS and also served 6 years in the Army Reserve. The impact of his coaching led to induction into the MN HS CC Coaches HOF, as well as the Armstrong Coaches HOF. In retirement, Rick continued his running and golfing and his commitment to teaching and coaching through adjunct teaching and assisting HS CC/Track teams. Rick pioneered coaching adult running groups in the early 80's, and helped many achieve their PR. His message was that you don't have to be good, you just have to have fun and "run fast and relaxed." The family wishes to thank Parks' Place and Park Nicollet Hospice for their continued, compassionate care. A celebration of life will be scheduled during the summer. Larson, Richard L. "Dick" of Golden Valley, died peacefully at North Memorial on August 19, 2011, surrounded by his family, following a stroke he suffered earlier in the week. He was 77. Preceded in death by father Weston, mother Clara, and brother Jimmy. Survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Barbara; his children Scot (Connie) of Golden Valley, Vicki (Bob) Bitner of Maple Grove, and Sandy (Brian) Schug of Becker; his grandchildren Christopher, Adam, Weston, Lauren, and John; his sisters Lois (Harry) Neitzke of Winona, and Joanie (Keith) Larson of Red Wing; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Dick taught industrial arts in the Robbinsdale school district for 31 years. In retirement he was able to volunteer, travel, and enjoy time at the cabin. Larson, Winnifred A. Age 81, of Crystal, passed peacefully Nov. 11, 2012. Winnie was born in Fergus Falls, MN, the only child of Charles and Effie Larson. Winnie loved education, traveling, music, her church and her dogs. She received a BA degree from Hamline University and an MA degree from the University of North Dakota. Winnie taught English, Speech and Drama and retired from District 281 in 1987. Her wit and spunk will be missed. Loechler, Tom - english & Football Coach
Loechler, Thomas Lester To those who knew and loved him, he was The Big Guy, which at 6'2" may have been more of a reference to his heart than his stature. Tom Loechler was a presence. Born September 10, 1940, to Lester and Agnes, the oldest of five children, Tom loved being part of a team. A three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at Robbinsdale High School, he earned a scholarship to the U of M where he excelled as placekicker and offensive tackle for the Golden Gophers. In his glory days, Tom "Golden Toe" Loechler played in two Rose Bowls ('61 and '62), married his high school sweetheart, Karen Syverson (now Bowen), and became a youth leader in his church, an advocate for peace and civil rights, and most importantly, Dad to a daughterand then another daughter, then another, and yet one more. Master's degree in tow, he returned to Robbinsdale High School in 1963 as an English teacher and assistant football coach before transferring to the brand-new Armstrong High School in 1970 where, in his first season as a head coach, the Falcons went undefeated. Tom was later inducted into the Hall of Fame at both Robbinsdale and Armstrong. He married Sandra Godfredson (1946-2008) in 1979 and gained two stepsons, Joel and Jon. Winters with Big T included skiing, tennis, volleyball, and handball. When he retired in 1997, he and Sandy became snowbirds to Timber Pines in Florida. Perhaps Tom's greatest legacy was making memories for friends and family at Lake Ossawinnamakee, where, since 1968, summer days started with the crossword puzzle and ended playing his guitar around the campfire. In between, he cursed his putts at Whitefish, fixed his many broken things, sailed (and bailed) his sailboat, towed countless water-skiers, and grilled his famously crispy chicken. In 2010, Tom married Susan Taylor (nee Seashore), whose companionship renewed his spirit. Despite his recent compromised health, Sue made it possible for Tom to live independently with dignity, and to enjoy quality time with family. Tom died at age 79 on Sunday, February 23, 2020. He will be missed by his wife Susan, daughters Laura Daly (Mark), Jane Loechler, Susan Thompson (Mark), Beth Loechler; stepsons Joel Godfredson (Doreen), Jon Godfredson (Natalie); siblings Dennis Loechler (Shari), Diane Peukert (Claus), Jan Marr (Tim), and Mark "Duger" Loechler (Sarah); 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; dozens of nieces and nephews, and many treasured friends and colleagues. Tom's life will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on March 7, 2020, at Minneapolis Golf Club, 2001 Flag Avenue, St. Louis Park, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Tom Loechler Scholarship Fund, to be awarded for exemplary sportsmanship exhibited by AHS football players. Main, Ron - Principle
Main, Ronald Ron Main passed away in his home on August 26, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Christine (Bunty) Main; daughters, Lisa Lefebvre and Kristi Kanne (Jeff, the World's Greatest son-in-law); nieces, and nephews. Ron was born in Duluth and graduated from Proctor high school. He attended Augsburg University, enlisted in the Army, then returned to Augsburg to earn a degree in English Literature and Physical Education. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, earning a M.A. and a PhD. He was a teacher and administrator at Columbia Heights and continued in administration at Armstrong High School in Robbinsdale. Upon retirement from education, he continued work for Ameriprise as well as Augsburg University's Development Department. Ron was an avid athlete and lifelong Gopher and Auggie fan. He was kind hearted, humorous and his generosity knew no limits. At his bequest his body was gifted to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Program. A gathering for family and friends will take place on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm, at the Lakewood Garden Mausoleum 3300 Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN. Merry, Ray - Principle
Merry, Ray is memorialized in MN high school basketball history for coaching the Luverne Cardinals to the 1964 State High School Championship. Coach Ray, and his "Merry Men", captured the state high school basketball title during the height and popularity of the celebrated single class era. Ray, 88, whose humble, practical, family-oriented spirit belied his basketball legacy, died Monday, March 19, 2018, at home in Plymouth. Born January 6, 1930, in Larimore, ND, Ray's all-state basketball honor earned him a scholarship to play at UND, which took a detour while he served in the navy. He returned to UND, graduated with a B.S. in Education, and began 2 years active duty in the Army, including service in Korea. Immediately "smitten" upon meeting Mary (McGuckin) on a blind date, he adored and married his college sweetheart in 1951, which subjected her to a lifetime of "explaining/spelling" her name alliteration, Mary Merry. Along with their growing family, Mary was a constant presence courtside as Ray taught/coached in the MN small towns of Magnolia, Goodhue, and through the pinnacle state championship win in Luverne. Though the Luverne Cardinals were predicted to be a perennial powerhouse, Ray and Mary found it necessary to relocate their family near major medical resources for continual treatment of daughter Jeanne's osteogenesis imperfecta challenges. "Courted" by Robbinsdale High School, Ray coached the "Robins" basketball team from 1964-68, while he acquired two Masters/a Specialist Degree and transitioned to administration as a Principal until RHS closed in 1982. He retired as a Principal at Armstrong High School in 1987. Retirement years allotted time for home improvement projects, honing master gardening skills (he loved his roses) and were divided between MN and a residence in The Villages, FL, until health needs "trumped" warm weather golf. A gifted conversationalist, Ray's focused and personal interest in every conversation was evident in the many times he'd address an individual by their first name. A consummate (and sometimes repetitive) storyteller, he'd preface an anecdote with "This is a true story" and finish it with a rhetorical "Isn't that interesting?" Not one for pretense, Ray's simple, unassuming side battled one uncharacteristic trait: Yearning to appear dapper and fashionable, (frustratingly) meant eschewing hearing aids because he didn't like "the look of them". He was in awe of his children (and grandchildren), yet dismissed his influential role in shaping their independence, success, work ethic, and perseverance. Throughout his life, Ray overcame challenges and made sacrifices, but one of the most difficult was his need to place his most cherished wife, Mary, in memory care. Inseparable for many years, he never recovered from her absence. He genuinely believed, however, he'd been abundantly blessed, and often said, "Life doesn't owe me anything". You were a gentle, good, solid man, husband, father, coach and mentor, Ray, and WE are the blessed ones for having known your love. Ray is survived by Mary, his bride of 66 yrs (in late stage Alzheimers); daughter, Jennifer (Randy) Koski of Lakeland, FL; son, Bruce (Anne LaFrance) of Wayzata; son, Robert of Plymouth; sister, Ruby (Orville) Johnson of Naples, FL; granddaughters, Marissa (Mark) Ray, Bri (Andy) Dunbar; grandsons, Graham (Liz) Merry, Griffin Merry (Bridget Blacker) of Seattle, WA; 9 great-grandchildren, ages 7 mos to 9 yrs.; many in-laws, nieces/nephews, numerous life- long friends. His daughter, Jeanne, sister, Myrell, and parents, Effie and Elmore preceded him in death. Norton John B. Norton John, age 76, of Plymouth passed away on November 14, 2004. He was a teacher, a loving husband for 51 years, a devoted father and grandfather, and a talented writer and lover of the English language. He was an esteemed educator for 31 years and a man whose opinions were valued. John was known for his charismatic sense of humor and his unusually sharp memory. He enjoyed literature, music, drama, and sports. John was preceded in death by his parents, Lon and Lorna of East Grand Forks, MN, and by a brother, Jim. Rinehart, Dick Died on June 14, 2022. Dick taught children and coached for 60 years. He began his career in Independence, MO. After moving to Minnesota in 1970, he taught in the Robbinsdale district and coached at Armstrong H.S.. During the last 10 years in the district, he taught adaptive physical education students and initiated programs including peer tutors, seniors from the high school, and rock climbing outings. He later coached at St. Thomas University for 20 years and at Providence H.S. for 6 years before retiring in 2015. Dick cherished his relationships with the many kids he came in contact with and the respect and affection he received in return. Dick is preceded in death by parents, Sally and Dutch Rinehart; brother, Jim; grandmother, Nora Gilchrist; and, heartbreakingly, daughter Maria Rinehart Hines. He loved and will always be loved and missed by his "bride" of 62 years, Dixie; his children, Cherie Rinehart Burke (Tom), Steven "Rico" Rinehart, Elaina O'Brien (Matthew), and son-in-law, Peter Hines. He was an educator in the Minneapolis and Robbinsdale school districts. Jim was a member of the Wayzata Masonic lodge and served in Plymouth city government. He retired to Phoenix, AZ. A lifelong educator, he tutored his grandchildren into his final days. Don loved traveling the world, including trips to over 70 countries, making friends in all lands. He was a passionate bicycler, hiker, bowler, canoer, fisherman, and Nordic skier. As a coach, he inspired the love of Nordic skiing in thousands of people. He was a Fulbright scholar, a lover of the German language (and beer), and a gentle, kind soul who loved to laugh. He will be missed by many including his wife, Susanne; son, Michael (Molly! Mrs. Larkin was born on January 26, 1925, in South St. Paul, Minnesota. On January 29, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as Audrey J. Krueger, she married Eugene D. Larkin, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Alan J. Larkin, of South Bend and Andrew D. Larkin, of Portland, Oregon; a grandson, Spencer Larkin, whom she loved and cherished; and a sister, Marilyn LaPlaca, of California. Mrs. Larkin moved with her husband to the South Bend area in 2005, coming from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Audrey retired in 1989 from the St. Paul Minnesota School Library System, where she was employed as a reference librarian. She was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Audrey was an avid cat lover, a supporter of the arts, an espouser of equal rights for all people. She will be missed by a loving family and all who had the opportunity to know her during her life journey. Her wishes were to be cremated, which her family honored. She also wanted all memorial contributions made in her honor directed to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Rd., Mishawaka, Indiana. There will be no visitation hours or services. Evelynne was a member of the Women's Association at the Galveston Country Club, a founding member of the Sandpipers Republican Women's Club and was active in many civic associations in Minnesota. She was also a member of West Isle Presbyterian Church. Evelynne loved life to the fullest. Many adults would likely freeze in place if asked to teach a middle school class, much less try to interest those students in theater. Then there are those special people for whom such work just comes naturally. Ertwin “Ert” Jones-Hermerding ’69 was such a person.
Ert’s Augsburg mentor, the late Ailene Cole (who taught theater at Augsburg for 29 years), saw it early on, insisting that his talent was definitely with the younger kids—the high-schoolers, sure; but more so, the younger ones. It was at Augsburg that Ert knew he wanted to be a teacher.
Football and Theater
When Ert found an opening for a speech teacher at Plymouth Junior High in the Robbinsdale, Minn., school district, he jumped at the chance because it gave him the opportunity to also coach football. to countless junior high (middle school) and high school students, and many of them went on to pursue interesting professional careers due to his strong influence. His students included Darcey Engen ’88 (Theatre Arts professor at Augsburg), Mad TV’s Mo Collins, and actor Steve Zahn, who once donned a curly wig in junior high and did a memorable, gut-splitting impersonation of TV exercise personality Richard Simmons.
“Herm,” as he was affectionately known by his students, found ways to interest athletes in the drama program, and speech students in the football program, increasing the pool from which to draw and surprising many students who may not have otherwise considered such involvement.
Herm was, most notably, the first to teach improvisational theatre at the junior high level, creating a new model that was replicated in many other schools. When he died suddenly in a one-vehicle motorcycle accident two years after retiring, the online posts from former students said it all—“Brought me out of my shell.” “Favorite teacher.” “Made learning fun.” “Creative and passionate.” “I was fat and unpopular…he cast me in the lead…he lit me up.” “Great mentor to so many kids.”
Herm’s students would often sit together at school lunch to write their own plays. With parental permission to miss some school, they would crowd into a conversion van to take their shows to local elementary schools. Using only milk crates as sets, and maybe a mic for the narrator, they often drew huge groups of youngsters.
When asked how her late husband came to have such a heart for young people, Pat Jones-Hermerding says she isn’t sure how you can understand what’s at someone’s core, but she knew Ert had found his calling. He opened up his ideas to his students, and he had the kind of personality to which they gravitated—a big personality that could take over a room. Everything became a story, says Pat, and it usually grew into an even bigger story. He was energetic and funny—and fit right in with the kids. She takes special pleasure in reminders of Ert’s legacy, particularly when encountering former students who have gone into theater, or played sports for a college, or become teachers.
The Apple Tree
The apple tree was dedicated on campus in October, thanks to the efforts of Ert’s Auggie roommate and longtime friend, Glen J. Peterson. In October, when more than 20 family members and friends of Ert gathered next to Foss Center to dedicate a young apple tree in his memory, those attending were unaware of the tree’s interesting history. They were just grateful for the tree’s healthy start, and for the opportunity to designate a different tree on campus since the tree they had originally dedicated to Ert’s memory in 2009 had become diseased and died.
The history of the replacement tree, they later learned, was tied to Augsburg student Emily Knudson ’15, who had planted three apple trees as part of her senior Keystone project. With this project, and through the Minnesota Project’s Fruits of the City program, Knudson was able to enter the network of hundreds of other tree owners and volunteer gleaners statewide who donate tens of thousands of pounds of fresh fruit each year to local food shelf partners. The newly placed plaque by the tree honors both Knudson’s project and Jones-Hermerding’s memory.
The Auggie Friendships
Among those who gathered at the tree’s dedication were two of Ert’s long-time Auggie friends, Glen J. Peterson ’69 and Karl Sneider ’71. All three had been members of Gamma Phi Omega, a campus/community service fraternity active on campus in the late ‘60s and ‘70s. Though participation in athletics was not a requirement for membership, many Gammas were involved in sports, which served to deepen many of the friendships. Peterson says that he and Ert were dorm mates as freshmen, and decided to join a third friend to live in a house by Riverside Park for their remaining three years. Peterson chuckles as he recalls that, since there were only two beds in the house when they moved in, Ert was content to sleep temporarily on a mattress on top of the kitchen table.
As Peterson reflects on those college days, he is reminded of how diligent a student Ert was, studying long hours for his language course. He was introspective, hard-working, and intense—in the best sense of that word—and those qualities applied to all areas of his college life: academics, football, track, and theater. He also exerted outsized influence in the life of his young brother, Mike.
If Peterson were to summarize Ert’s legacy in a few words, “integrity” would quickly come to mind. Ert was honest and trustworthy, says Peterson, and dedicated as an educator and as a person. Ertwin M. Jones-Hermerding, age 62, of Ottertail, MN, passed away on August 11, 2009 in a fatal motorcycle accident.
Ert loved people, theater, athletics, family, and the Otter Tail County lake community. Honored as 2003 Distinguished Alumni from Augsburg College, Ert continued teaching after retiring in 2003 from the Robbinsdale School District. He will be remembered for his passion, integrity, and insistence that people pursue their own greatness.
Ert is survived by his loving wife, Patricia; daughter, Mee Lynn (Matt) Stevens; son, Harper; father Marvin (Dolores); brothers, Mike (Janet) and Todd; and grandson, Dominic, as well as many other loving family and friends. Preceding Ert in death is his mother, Dorothy.
There will be a memorial service at 42442 County Highway 1, Ottertail, MN, on Saturday, August 15 at 4:00 p.m. with visitation starting two hours prior. A second service will take place at Cooper High School Auditorium on Tuesday, August 18, at 7:00 p.m.
Memorials preferred to Children’s Home Society of MN, Cooper High School Theater, and Perham Community Theater.

Former students, friends and family from the Otter Tail lake country to the Twin Cities metro area are mourning the death of Ert Jones-Hermerding, a career educator and coach who was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Friends and alumni in the Robbinsdale School District, where he taught for 34 years, scheduled a special memorial gathering in his honor.
Jones-Hermerding, 62, also made his mark on the East Otter Tail lake country after his retirement here.
He directed two fall musicals for Perham Community Education, in 2007 and 2008, and was highly regarded by the cast and crew.
His death prevented him from directing a brand new theater project at the Perham high school.
"We are really excited about a 'Traveling Children's Play' that will be presented to other schools in the area. It is something I have done for 35 years in the past and it is a new concept for Perham," wrote an enthused Jones-Hermerding in an email to the Perham Enterprise, only a couple weeks ago.
School activities director Fred Sailer and Superintendent Tamara Uselman were also enthused about the new project, and were very supportive of the community theater program.
"Ert was a full time teacher, even long after he retired. And he was the best kind of teacher - because it was never about him or his ego or his own importance," commented Uselman, Perham Superintendent. "He mentored people, staff and students, into believing in themselves, into seeing the importance of their everyday work, into realizing how much the community valued them. Not too many people can pull this off full-time without smacking of phoniness, but Ert could and Ert did. He actually hummed with energy and drive; it was awesome to be near him. And it is difficult to understand that a life force like that could end. Ert made us better; we will miss him; and we were lucky that he came into our lives."
"I believe Ert would say that we are all teachers, coaches and directors... to someone," said Sailer, who delivered a eulogy at the memorial serice on Otter Tail Lake. "He would ask that we embrace that incredible responsibility and privilege to lift each other up. Ert's gift to us were these life lessons, our gift to Ert's memory will be how we use these lessons to make a difference one day at a time, one person at a time...with no regrets.
Because of his strong connection to students, and his range of honors and awards, the Minneapolis Star Tribune published a feature obituary on Jones-Hermerding. He directed nearly 150 theatrical productions at Robbinsdale schools. He was also a football coach, who led the team to a pair of conference titles in 1984-85. He was coach of the year, and was given the Distinguished Alumni Award from Augsburg College, where he graduated in 1969.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol report, Jones-Hermerding was driving a 2007 Honda south on 78, when he left the roadway into the west ditch, went over a driveway, and landed on the upslope of another driveway. The accident was reported at about 6:01 p.m.
Assisting at the scene were the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office and Perham's East Otter Tail Emergency Services.
